There is a fascinating story to the Cambodia gambling dens that lie just across the dividing line from nearby Thailand, where casino betting is not permitted. Eight casinos are anchored in a relatively small location in the municipality of Poipet in Cambodia. This collection of Cambodia gambling dens is in a prime location, a 3 to four hour drive from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 biggest wagering locations in Asia. Cambodia gambling halls do a thriving business with Thai blue-collar workers and guests from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very few Westerners. The amazing income gained from the gambling halls ranges from seven and a half million dollars to over twelve and a half million dollars, and there are a few controls requirements for gambling den ownership. Ownership is presumed to be mostly Thai; although, investment sources are cryptic. The borders are officially open from 09:00 to 17:00, and even though visas are apparently needed to pass, there are ways around this, as is accurate of many border crossings.
The original Cambodia gambling halls opened in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were forced to close in 1998, leaving just one gambling hall in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a docked bateau gambling hall, contains 150 slot machines and 60 table games. The Naga gambling hall never closes with forty two tables of mini-baccarat banque, 4 tables of twenty-one, ten of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and a single table each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The 1st casino in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in 1999 and the Golden Crown soon followed. A total of one hundred and fifty slots and five table games at the Golden Crown and 104 slot machine games and 68 gaming tables at the Holiday Palace. The newer Holiday Palace Casino and Resort highlights 300 slot machines and 70 table games and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slot machines and ninety six table games, including 87 baccarat (the most dominant game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Additionally, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five one armed bandits and sixty six of the familiar gaming tables, as well as one table of Casino Stud Poker. Another one of the 8 gambling dens in Poipet, again a part of a hotel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six slots and 97 casino games. The Star Vegas Casino is is located in an international resort and hotel complex that features a number of luxuries on top of the gambling den, which contains ten thousand square feet of 130 slot machines and 88 table games.
